Reclamation of Hulhumale’ lagoon for issuance of land to commence next month

Preparations have commenced to reclaim Hulhumale’ Phase II’s lagoon for land which will be issued to recipients under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme.

Urbanco, in an announcement on Thursday, instructed to vacate vessels based at the lagoon of Hulhumale’ Phase II.

As per the announcement, the lagoon is being vacated for a project being undertaken by Urbanco. However, details of the project were not disclosed in the announcement.

Nevertheless, Sun has learned that the project entails the area’s reclamation. While physical works on reclamation is scheduled to commence next month, a large portion of the reclaimed area will be allocated to issue land plots for recipients under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme.

The area was planned to be developed as a marina by the previous administration.

700 land plots will be issued from the reclaimed area under the government’s ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme.

Draws for plot allocation, issued for free under the scheme, have been ongoing since Tuesday.

Planning Ministry published the permanent list of 5,000 recipients of the ‘Binveriya’ scheme on Sunday night.

While the tentative list had listed 19,858 eligible applicants, the permanent list lists 19,865 eligible applicants.

Housing Ministry previously said that 18,955 applicants will receive plots from the land that is currently available, while the remaining 684 applicants receive plots from land that will be added later. They include applicants who are under 25 years of age and are unmarried and childless.

As per the Ministry, all applicants on the list will have land registered to their name before the end of the current term.
