Land issuance under ‘Binveriya’ to begin on Tues

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih states his administration will begin issuing land under the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme on Tuesday.

He made the announcement during a campaign rally in Noonu Kudafari on Saturday.

Addressing the rally, the president said the issuance of land is at its “last stage”, and that families would begin receiving their land starting Tuesday.

The announcement comes after the Planning Ministry said on Friday that 50 percent of the land reclamation project in Gulhifalhu and Giraavarufalhu is now complete.

The two lagoons are being reclaimed to provide land and flats under the two housing schemes ‘Binveriya’ and ‘Gedhoruveriya’.

In an interview to RaajjeTV, Planning Ministry’s senior executive director Mohamed Arif said the government is working to complete the reclamation work, and allocate land to the recipients, as soon as possible.

Addressing Saturday’s campaign rally, the president described housing as the “most pressing need of the Maldivian people.”

He noted that the problem is particularly pressing, in the congested Maldivian capital.

The president said a survey conducted by the government showed there were 18,000 to 20,000 people in need of flats in Male’.

He said he intends to ensure that all eligible applicants receive housing.

The government released the list of over 10,000 recipients of land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme on June 26th.

And, the list of over 15,000 recipients of flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme, last week.
