Maldives Reform Movement (MRM)’s leader Faris Maumoon, on Sunday, officially announced his decision to contest the presidential election slated for September 9th.
He made the announcement through a video message on Twitter.
Faris attributed his decision to contest the election to bettering the nation as requested by the people.
He noted that 1,500 signatures required submit his candidacy form, and was seeking volunteers for his campaign.
Faris is contesting as an independent candidate in light of the Elections Commission (EC)’s decision to dissolve MRM for failure to meet the 3,000 membership mark required by the Political Parties Act, which may pose difficulties to contest as a representative of the party despite being appealed at court.
MRM, about a week earlier, held discussions with Jumhoory Party. They have not accepted the invitation extended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to form a coalition.
