The Elections Commission (EC) has passed a vote of no-confidence against the commission’s chairman Fuad Thaufeeq.

The vote took place on Monday.

The commission has five members, including Fuad.

Three out of four of the remaining members voted in favor of the motion.

Fuad was not immediately available for comment regarding the vote.

The move to ouster Fuad comes after three of the commission’s decided last month that they would not attend any meetings headed by him.

The three members in question are; Ali Nashaath, Mohamed Asif, and Dr. Mohamed Zahir.

Some of the commission’s members have previously accused Fuad of bias – an allegation he denies.

The vote comes with Nashaath’s term set to expire on Tuesday. The president had nominated Nashaath for a new term, but the Parliament had gone to recess before making a decision.

It also comes as the commission prepares to hold the presidential election, slated to take place on September 9.
