Parliament OKs MDP-backed committee composition changes

The Parliament on Monday approved changes to the composition of permanent committees of the legislative assembly, as proposed by the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The composition of the Parliament had changed after 13 MPs left MDP, which holds supermajority at the Parliament, and several independent MPs joined the party.

At the second extraordinary sitting held Monday morning, MDP proposed approving the first option on the report on recommendations on changes to the composition of committees.

The motion passed with the vote of 34 MPs. 14 MPs voted against the motion.

Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef, who presided the sitting, asked MDP parliamentary group leader Mohamed Aslam to submit names for committees by 09:00 pm Monday.

The MDP-backed proposal had passed after 10 amendments submitted by the opposition were rejected.
