Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s candidate who is contesting for a second term in the upcoming presidential elections, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has remarked that a five-year term was concluded in peace and unity because the coalition formed to elect this government had remained intact till today.

Speaking at a rally held at Sh. Foakaidhoo to officially launch MDP’s campaign – President Solih said MDP’s first administration saw a heartbreaking end.

He drew an example from history; the parties which had formed a coalition to elect a government in 2013 falling apart.

The president said Maldives then fell to a fearful chapter as a result where political freedom had been stripped in addition to many other rights.

“What ferocity did the Maldives have to face then? Where did the political leaders have to stay back then? What state was the judges’ house in? How did the members of the parliament have to live,” he reminisced.

Nevertheless, the president said as he nears the conclusion of his term today, he has reestablished peace, unity and order across the nation as he envisioned.

He said this was a result of the coalition remaining intact till present.

“We are now seeing the five years of an administration elected by the people in 2018. The five years was also won by a coalition. Contrary to previous occasions, this coalition remains intact till present,” he said.

Speaking further, President Solih said he feels the happiness of having done much for the Maldivian citizens in the past five years today.

He expressed confidence in the people's support to this testament.

President Solih added that his main aim for the next five years is a 'happy and peaceful' Maldives.
