Parliament National Security Committee has decided to travel to Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia to investigate the case of allegations involving former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom’s brother Abdulla Yameen with regard to the embezzlement of funds related to oil trade involving amounts totaling up to $800 million.
The committee will start its travels after the parliament goes into recess. The committee is composed of 11 members, although a member of the committee has said that it is possible that all members of the committee might not take part in the travels.
The dates for the travels have not yet been decided by the committee.
Speaking at the committee meeting Manadhoo MP Mohamed Thariq said that they should find a person appropriate for such an investigation before embarking on such a mission. Committee Chair Hulhu-Henveyru MP Reeko Moosa Manik said that the committee will take it into consideration.
Indian newspaper The Week had reported that the $800 million oil trade scandal was carried out through STO Singapore Mocom Trading Company and a Mocom company established in Malaysia. The paper reported that oil sold to Maldives under subsidized prices was resold in the back market in Myanmar.
