MTCC barge loaded with rock boulders wrecks on Kumundhoo channel

A barge belonging to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) ran aground on HDh. Kumundhoo channel on Wednesday evening.

The barge was loaded with rock boulders required for the project to upgrade Kumundhoo channel.

Kumundhoo Council member Ali Anwar told Sun that efforts were underway to refloat the barge which has not born any successes as of yet.

Anwar, noting the refloating efforts are being carried out through a tug boat, said it was unlikely for the efforts to bear any successes if only one tug boat is utilized for the process.

“The barge is extremely heavier on the rear side. Only one tug boat is being used at present,” he said.

Anwar said the wrecking of a barge of such size is expected to result in severe damage to the channel.
