Crude oil thrown at Democrats’ party centre

Crude oil was thrown at the party cente of the ‘The Democrats’, the new political party being formed by supporters of Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been on Thursday night.

A group of unidentified people on motorbikes threw bags of crude oil at the party centre located in front of the artificial beach while a meeting was ongoing at the premise. People who were at the party centre at the time were sprayed with crude oil as well.

Mohamed Shifaz, one of the individuals spearheading the activities of ‘The Democrats’, in a tweet, said the party will not back down despite the act which he described as cowardly.

Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef was at the party centre at that time. He had gotten specks of crude oil on himself and his clothes.

The party has yet to issue an official statement about the incident.
