Nilandhoo MP Abdul Muhsin Hameed (J4) is among the 50 MPs who signed the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

J4 is one of the 17 independent MPs at the Parliament, and the only independent MP to endorse the motion.

Eva, who was elected the Deputy Speaker with the support of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s supermajority, left the party on May 17. The party’s parliamentary group decided the very next day to remove her as Deputy Speaker.

The no-confidence motion was submitted to the Parliament with the signatures of 50 MPs on Tuesday.

Eva is one of a dozen MPs aligned with Speaker Mohamed Nasheed who left MDP last week. They have submitted an application to the Elections Commission to form a new party, The Democrats.

Parliamentary regulations dictate that votes to dismiss Speaker or Deputy Speaker requires the majority of the entire Parliament – meaning at least 43 out of the 87 MPs at the Parliament.
