Several additional MPs will join PPM very soon: Gayoom

Interim President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that several Members of Parliament (MPs) who are currently not members of PPM, will join the party very soon.

Answering a question posed by Sun Online at a ceremony held today at PPM Office for nine Councillors from four different atolls to join PPM, Gayoom said that several parliament seats will become vacant in the near future and that PPM will win the seats effortlessly and become the party most represented at the Parliament.

Referring to the presidential primary election of PPM, Gayoom said that the primary will be competitive, but it will not result in any division among party members afterwards.

He said that PPM will prove to the public that it is an exemplary political party, and that the primary will be held in an independent, fair environment and that all members of the party will support the person who wins the primary.

“Several additional MPs will join PPM very soon. PPM will become the biggest party at the parliament. Also, our presidential primary will be very competitive. However after the primary, there will be no division within the party. We are more politically mature than to let that happen,” said Gayoom, who earlier announced his decision to contest in the election for PPM presidency.

The Councillors who joined PPM today are AA. Mathiveri Atoll Councillor Abdullah Luthfy, K. Himmafushi Council President Shaan Ibrahim, K. Himmafushi Council Vice President Ahmed Hameed, K. Himmafushi Council Members Ahmed Siraj, Moosa Yahya, Mohamed Ismail, Ibrahim Zaheem, R. Angolhitheem Council Member Ali Ibrahim, and Th. Kandoodhoo Council Member Mohamed Amir.

In addition to the five Councillors of Himmafushi, four influential individuals of the island who previously worked to promote Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), also joined PPM today.
