Hussain Humam has lodged a case with the Supreme Court, seeking a review of the death penalty issued against him for the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
Afrasheem was found stabbed to death in the stairwell of his residence, H. Funviluge, on October 1, 2012.
Humam was found guilty of Afrasheem’s murder and sentenced to death by the Criminal Court on January 16, 2015. The sentence was upheld by the High Court on September 7, 2015, and by the Supreme Court on June 24, 2016.
A case was submitted on behalf of Humam seeking a review of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the death penalty against him last month. However, the court has yet to make a decision on registering the case.
Though rare, there have been some cases where the Supreme Court has changed judgements following reviews.
A prominent politician and religious scholar, Afrasheem had been killed upon return home after an appearance on a religious show on TVM.
Investigators placed the time of death between 11:30 pm and 01:00 am.
