Udhayyu’s murder: Suspects’ families and friends testify in their defense

Ahmed Udhayyu.

Family members and friends of suspects charged in connection with the gang fight in GA. Maamendhoo in February 2021 that resulted in the death of a teenager testified in their defense on Thursday.

Ahmed Udhayyu, 17, was stabbed to death in a gang fight in Maamendhoo on February 8, 2021.

The death produced charges against four people; three adults and one minor. The minor was found guilty of murder with intent back in October 2022, and sentenced to detention in a juvenile detention facility.

The adults charged with accessories to a murder using sharp-edged weapon include:

  • Sharaf Rasheed, Bilaihmaage, GA. Maamendhoo
  • Ahmed Shameem, Rihifarudhaage, GA. Maamendhoo
  • Mohamed Mazin, Gulfaamge, GA. Maamendhoo

In a hearing in the trial of the accused adults held at the Criminal Court on Thursday – four witnesses produced by the defense had given their testimonies.

First to testify were two witnesses submitted by Sharaf and Mazin who gave their testimonies from Maamendhoo Magistrate Court. They identified themselves as friends of the accused.

One of the witnesses, underscoring having been present at the scene of the gang fight, testified that Sharaf, surely, was not among individuals who attacked Udhayyu. However, the witness stressed being unable to pinpoint who had exactly been involved in the attack as it took place during nighttime in a location that was dark.

The witness attributed being sure Sharaf had not been among those who attacked Udhayyu to the fact that they had known each other since childhood.

The prosecution, following the conclusion of the testimony, pointed out the discrepancies to a statement previously given by the witness to the police. The statement, signed by the witness, said they were informed of the gang fight which led to Udhayyu’s death from another eyewitness who saw the scene.

In response, the witness claimed not to recall the statement given to the police.

Shameem’s father and his sister also testified during Thursday’s hearing.

Both of them said Shameem had been home from 8:30pm to 10:00am on the night of the incident.
