MP Jabir: Resort management jobs must be reserved for locals

There is no reason why locals alone shouldn’t be hired to top posts in Maldivian resorts, states Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir.

Jabir made the remark in a resolution he submitted to the Parliament expressing concern over the high number of foreigners in top management of resorts and guesthouses in Maldives. He called for resort management, HR management, and chief accountant positions to be reserved for locals.

He said that Maldives must have a system to educate and train locals for such key jobs, and bring and end to hiring high-paid foreigners for such jobs.

Jabir expressed concern over complaints of mistreatment of local workers by resort managements.

He said there’s no reason why such a large of Maldives’ revenue should go to foreigners.

“I submit this resolution because I, as a parliamentary representative, am concerned that foreigners are taking such large dollar bills, while the dollar bills that go into the pockets of locals are so small. The outcome of this resolution must be positive changes to the Maldivian economy,” he said.

Jabir said that even locals with the highest educational qualifications have no hope of gaining employment in the management of a well-established luxury resort in Maldives.

He said that it is blocking the path to the advancement of qualified locals, and increasing remittance.
