The Government of the Maldives, on Monday, expressed strong support for the continuous efforts by Saudi Arabia to reach a comprehensive political solution to end the crisis in Yemen.

Maldivian Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Monday, welcomed the recent meetings held in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, from April 9th to 13th, by a Saudi delegation led by Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Yemen Mohammed Al Jabir – building upon the Saudi Initiative announced in March 2021, and the positive momentum created by the humanitarian truce in Yemen since its announcement by the United Nations in April 2022.

The statement further read that the Government of Maldives calls on all Yemeni parties – the legitimate government and the Houthis – to respond positively to these efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Yemeni people for development, prosperity, peace and stability in the nation.

United Nations have reported over 150,000 deaths to date in the civil war between the Houthis and the Yemeni government following the former’s takeover of Sanaa in 2014.
