The Maldivian Government, on Wednesday, has strongly condemned Israeli forces' demolition of buildings inside the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in Sheikh Jarrah at occupied East Jerusalem.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry emphasized that such actions constitute a clear violation of international law, undermine the work of the United Nations and humanitarian agencies, and further exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation faced by the Palestinian people. It was also emphasized that the actions are in contravention of the rulings of the International Court of Justice.

The Ministry reiterated the Maldivian Government’s firm backing of UNRWA and its critical humanitarian role in supporting the Palestinian people. It also reiterated the Maldives’ call on the international community to take meaningful action to ensure Israel is held accountable for its persistent violations of international law.

Last month, Israel’s Knesset approved a law to cut electricity and water supplies to UNRWA facilities in East Jerusalem. Israel has taken similar measures before. In 2024, the Knesset passed a law banning UNRWA operations in Israel, alleging that some UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7, 2023 events—claims the agency denies. The UN has stated that UNRWA maintains strict neutrality standards.
