HA. Baarah Council, on Thursday, revealed Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) was the only applicant for land following the council’s decision to issue land from the island, free of charge, to political parties.
Baarah Council, following their decision to issue land from the island, free of charge, to political parties, opened applications for land last Thursday. As per the council’s announcement – applying political parties must have over 2,500 registered members of which 300 members must be Baarah natives.
Baarah Council member Ali Shameem confirmed to Sun that PPM was the only applicant so far, while the party also meets the council’s requirements.
“Any political party that meets the requirement will be eligible for the land. They have the opportunity to apply as well. There is no deadline. A political party may apply even a year later. They will be issued the land if they meet the requirements,” he said.
Shameem said that the land is estimated to be officially handed over to PPM after Ramadan.
Baarah Council Vice President Ali Ameez previously remarked that the council believes in the importance of issuing of land to political parties.
“As we believe, it would be much easier for political parties to visit when there is a place for their accommodation. The decision would greatly benefit political parties,” he said.
Land from Baarah will be issued to political parties from plots decided by the council out of mixed-used land plots allocated under the Baarah Land Use Plan.
The mixed-used land plots, measuring no bigger than 1,000 to 2,000 square feet, will be issued for a period of 15 days.
The land can only be used by the political party for a purpose that benefits them politically. If the use of the land does not fall within this category, the council can repossess the land if the political party fails to make the necessary changes within a period of one month.
