JP puts forth resolution to congress to contest presidential elections

Jumhoory Party (JP) has put forth a resolution on the agenda for the party’s congress scheduled for today and tomorrow to contest the presidential elections.

Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday, JP leader Qasim Ibrahim’s advisor, former Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed confirmed that the resolution had been put on the agenda.

The resolution, submitted by former South Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed (Abulho), states that JP should contest in the upcoming presidential election, or compete through a coalition spearheaded by the party.

The resolution was scheduled for late Saturday afternoon. Members present at the congress will debate on the resolution. The congress will be chaired by JP’s leader Qasim during the debate.

Ilham, stressing a vote would be asked for the resolution, said that the agenda would not be amended. Citing JP has previously led in presidential elections – he said that the party will take a decision on the presidential election based on what is the most beneficial to the people.

Main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has invited all parties in the incumbent government coalition to continue the coalition to this year’s presidential election. JP, included in the current government coalition, has yet to make a decision regarding the invitation.

JP’s leader Qasim Ibrahim competed in two of the three elections held after the new consultation came into force; 2008 and 2013’s presidential elections. He failed to secure enough votes to qualify for a second round both times.

Nevertheless, JP was the most important party in the coalitions formed during the second road of both these elections. Three governments that assumed office after the new constitution came into force were coalitions that comprised JP.
