Adhaalath Party (AP), on Monday night, resolved to hold discussions with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) before endorsing the party’s presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih has invited the remaining three political parties forming the incumbent coalition government – Jumhoory Party (JP), Adhaalath Party, and Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) – to endorse him in the coming presidential election as well via a letter.
Adhaalath Party called an emergency meeting following the receipt of the letter – in order to make a decision on endorsing President Solih. During the meeting, it was decided that the party will hold discussions with MDP prior to endorsing President Solih.
President Solih is presently working towards securing the support of the political parties forming the incumbent government coalition.
In this regard, a delegation of President Solih met with JP’s leader, Maamigili MP Qasim at Sun Island resort on Saturday night. Details of the meeting have not been disclosed to date.
However, Hulhumale’ MP and younger brother of President Solih, Ali Niyaz, who was part of the delegation, said the discussions went way better than expected. He expressed hope of winning the election by forming a coalition with JP.
While President Solih works towards forming coalitions – his target is to win the election on the first round with the backing of multiple parties.
