The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has slapped the Guraidhoo School’s football team with a one-year ban over the attack on match officials after the U17 Interschool Football Tournament semifinal with Kalaafaanu School last Monday.
In a statement Wednesday after a review of the incident, FAM said it was clear that Guraidhoo School’s players had expressed displeasure at and attacked the referee after the match, and that the team’s officials and supporters had also joined the players in the attack on the match’s officials.
As per FAM’s disciplinary regulations, the players and officials registered to the Guraidhoo School’s U17 team have been suspended from all of FAM’s competitions for the next one-year period, said the association.
Meanwhile, three of the players – Hussain Razeen, Moosa Ailam and Hassan Razan were slapped with a two-year suspension.
The fight that broke out Monday has been condemned by Education Minister Aishath Ali and Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof, as well as the local football family.
Kalaafaanu won the U17 semi by beating Guraidhoo 2-1.
