State Trading Organization (STO)’s managing director Hussain Amr Mohamed Rashad has decided to back MDP’s leader and Parliament speaker, former president Mohamed Nasheed in his bid to win the MDP presidential ticket and joined his campaign.
With a little over a week to the election, Amr joined Nasheed in a campaign tour of Huvadhoo Atoll on Thursday.
Amr is a native of Huvadhoo Atoll and had run for Thinadhoo constituency in the 2014 parliamentary elections.
Nasheed and his campaign team are set to visit several islands in GA. Atoll and GDh. Atoll in the three-day tour.
Amr, who served as CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) during Nasheed’s administration, is a chief policymaker at MDP.
While Amr has now publicly backed Nasheed, many of the other heads of state-owned enterprises are backing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the MDP presidential ticket.
Amr had also been the first politician from MDP to announce his decision to run on behalf of Nasheed’s faction in the party’s election to elect a chairperson to last year. However, he later withdrew his candidacy.
The rift within MDP grows as the two leaders compete for the party’s ticket. The election, in which 57,255 MDP members are eligible to vote, will take place on January 28.
