Evening Café blaze: Seven moved to temporary shelter

Seven people who reside in the house neighboring the café in Male’ City where a fire broke out Wednesday have been provided temporary housing, states the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

An official from NDMA told Sun the authority is working on identifying people affected by the fire incident who require temporary housing.

According to the official, the people provided temporary shelter so far are a family of seven, including an elderly person, who reside in M. Guleynooranmaage, which neighbors Evening Café.

 They were provided temporary shelter because they are unable to return home at this time, said the official.

However, the details of the damage to the house are unclear at this point.

The fire broke out at the Evening Café, a popular three-story Indian food restaurant, at around 06:12 pm Wednesday. The fire originated from the kitchen, and quickly spread to the rest of the building. The kitchen and the staff accommodation were burnt beyond use.

The fire was controlled at around 07:29 pm.

MNDF said that a full extent of the damages to the building can only be known after a full investigation. They are also looking into the cause of the fire.
