President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday night said that in line with the government's promise to solve the housing crisis faced by residents of Male’ City, land plots and flats will be given prior to the end of this tenure.

During a meeting held at Dharubaaruge, with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members of Male’ City and campaign teams for the upcoming primary, the President said that before the end of this term, land would be issued, and people will be able to start living in the flats being built by the government.

“Not saying this to manipulate and get votes. This has no connection to the votes. By mid-year, just as I vowed, we will issue land to the residents of Male’.”

He went on to note that currently evaluation work was ongoing, and once that is done as best as possible, land will be given this year.

“Which government has started a housing project and handed over the units? None. But God willing, this government will finish the housing units we began to build, and the Male’ resident’s in need of it will be able to start living there this year.”

Of the housing issues ongoing currently in Hulhumale’, the biggest two project are being carried out by India’s JMC Projects Limited and National Buildings Construction Company (NBCC). Each of these companies are developing 2000 flats.

Additionally, work is ongoing for the 120 council housing units, 220 affordable housing units and 660 midrange units being developed in Hulhumale phase one and two by Apollo Housing.

While only registered citizens were eligible for land plots, those who lived in Male’ for over 15 years were able to apply for the ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ scheme for the flats in Male’ area.
