MVR 778.5M spent from Green Fund by November’s end

MVR 778.5 million was utilized from the Green Fund to finance various government projects in Male’ City and other islands by the end of November 2022, according to the Finance Ministry.

According to the monthly fiscal development report released by the Finance Ministry last week, the state collected MVR 897.2 million as Green Tax by the end of November 2022.

Green Tax collected from tourist resorts, city hotels, guesthouses, liveaboards and homestays in K. Atoll made for the single biggest contributor to the Green Fund, followed by AA. Atoll, and R. Atoll.

MVR 74.2 million was collected as Green Tax in November alone.

This included MVR 70 million from resorts, MVR 2.1 million from guesthouses, MVR 1.8 million from hotels, MVR 2.08 million from liveaboard vessels, and MVR 2,350.08 from homestays.

  • AA. Atoll: MVR 7.9 million
  • R. Atoll: MVR 7.7 million
  • B. Atoll: MVR 5.4 million
  • Lh. Atoll: MVR 5.3 million

Statistics released by the Finance Ministry show MVR 51.4 million from the Green Tax was spent on various projects in November alone.

The Green Fund is utilized to finance coastal protection projects, sanitation projects, installation of clean water, and waste management projects.

The opposition has repeatedly called for greater transparency regarding the utilization of the fund.
