Male’ City Council has taken over cleaning public spaces in Male’ City and Vilimale.

Public spaces in Male’ City and Vilimale were cleaned by Waste Management Corporation Ltd (WAMCO) under an agreement with the council which expired yesterday.

In an announcement on Monday, WAMCO said that they have ceased to clean public spaces in Male’ City and Vilimale’ as of that day. However, they noted that the service would still be provided to registered customers upon request.

Henveiru constituency member of Male’ City Council Adam Rameez told Sun that all preparations were complete for the council’s cleaning staff to begin working on Tuesday evening.

“Recruited 100 staff and divided them between Male’ and Vilimale. Pick up and everything are also ready,” he added.

Male’ City Council decided against renewing the agreement with WAMCO, citing they can do it at a rate cheaper than paying MVR 3.2 million to WAMCO annually.

Rameez also said that WAMCO’s work had not been up to par, whereas, they failed to make improvements on several notices.

As per the Council, they can manage the cleaning operations at MVR 1.5 million.
