Concerns over delays in commencement of work on Dhanbidhoo-Kalaidhoo causeway

L. Dhanbidhoo.

The councils of both L. Kalaidhoo and L. Dhanbidhoo have expressed concern over the delays in starting the work on the causeway connecting the two islands.

In a statement that was signed by all 10 councilors of both islands, they said that the delay in the causeway is a cause for concern and that the project, which heavily contributes to the development of the islands, has been included in the budget for the past 3 years.

“Please disclose the earliest date that the work on the causeway can begin and please facilitate the commencement of the project as soon as possible,” they said in the statement.

They also said that the people of the islands are worried as a lot of developmental projects are being delayed as a result of work on the causeway project not having commenced.

A copy of the statement was sent to the President's office, Planning Ministry, and Local Government Authority.

The causeway between L. Kalaidhoo and Dhanbidhoo is one of the presidential pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. While his presidential term is almost at an end - the project has yet to be awarded to a contractor. Dhanbidhoo council met and shared their concerns over the problem in August this year.

Four months after the meeting, no progress has been made in the project.
