GMR has said that following the takeover of the operations of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the transition process employed by GMR Male’ International Limited (GMIAL) and MACL has ensured a smooth switch over.
GMR said this in a statement, and also said that none of the operations of INIA were affected in this process.
“GMR & Malaysia Airports came to the Republic of Maldives to participate in the development of a modern and progressive Maldives and would not like to leave with the task being half done,” says the statement.
It also said that the legal position and stand of GMIAL remains unchanged, and that it was purely in recognition of the decision of the Singapore Court of Appeals that a smooth takeover was facilitated.
“So whilst the legal process for determination of compensation, etc is on and will take its own course; we remain committed and open to a dialogue with the Government of Maldives and in service to the people of Maldives.”
The agreement with GMR, which allowed the company to manage INIA for 25 years, was terminated on 27 November. The government handed over the management of the airport to MACL on 7 December.
