Parliament National Security Committee has decided to nominate former Media Council President Mohamed Nazeef to the Board of the Local Government Authority (LGA). Heis nominated for the seat designated for a member of the general public.
This seat was previously filled by former Human Rights Commission member Mohamed Zahid, who also filled the post of Vice President of the LGA during his tenure as Board Member. He is currently the Deputy Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights.
The applicants for the post of LGA Board Member are interviewed and evaluated with regard to their capabilities, experience, leadership, integrity and standard of education. The call for applicants for LGA Board Member was opened by the Majlis.
Nazeef scored 95.3 percent from the Committee evaluation while the two other applicants, Gaaf Dhaalu Rathafandhoo Finifenmaage Shujau Hussain and Dhaftharu number 1890 Ahmed Nasheed Hussain, scored 84.5 percent and 33.7 percent respectively.
MDP holds majority in the National Security Committee, and the Committee is chaired by the party’s Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik.
The Committee has to forward Nazeef’s name to the Parliament floor and Nazeef must survive a vote before he is appointed to the post. Shujau’s name will also be submitted to the Parliament as he scored above 75 percent from the Committee evaluation.
The LGA Board consists of 9 members, and is composed of the Home Minister, a member of the Male’ City Council, four Atoll Council members, a member from a civil society organization, a member from the Addu City Council and a member from the general public.
