Ghaazee School teachers protest against school administrator over corruption

Ghaazee School teachers protest against the school’s Administrator Aishath Shiyaza over corruption on December 14, 2022.

Ghaazee School teachers, on Wednesday, protested at the school premise, allegedly over Education Ministry’s failure to take action against the school’s Administrator Aishath Shiyaza over acts of corruption.

The protest commenced after the morning session concluded on Wednesday. The teachers were holding posters stating their views on the issue.

A teacher who participated in the protest told Sun on the condition of anonymity that the severity of acts of corruption by the Administrator had been brought to the attention of Education Ministry, despite which no action has been taken to date.

The teacher accused the Administrator of forging leave certificates from some staff, embezzling from the money received by the school from leasing its turf ground, and using her post to provide advantages to third parties from the school.

The teacher also suspects corruption in the construction works of the school.

“She snaps her fingers in front of other people, and says she will make the case disappear,” the teacher added.

The case was first submitted by Ghazee School’s senior management to Principal Mariyam Mohamed.

Before any action was taken – the issue escalated as a result of which the principal took action against the administrator.

However, the teachers allege that the principal was threatened by Education Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Ahmed Ali for taking action.

“The administrator stayed, the principal had to leave,” the teacher added.

The teacher said that subsequently, the school is now run without a principal. In this regard, the school is now overseen by its deputy principal.

Pointing out the zero-tolerance for corruption pledge of the government – the teacher said encouraging corruption within the ministry was absolutely unacceptable.

A team from Education Ministry visited the school after hearing about the protest. However, the teachers proceeded with the protest as their frustrations increased after the meeting.
