The Managing Director of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) Ismail Fauzee on Wednesday stated that discussions were ongoing on how to make the fish factory in Th. Funaddoo operational at the earliest possible.

It has been about 14 years since Funaddoo fish factory has last been operational.

There are over 40 fishing vessels in the atoll, and the fish factory issue has been a major concern of fishermen in the area, as it causes many difficulties for them.

Speaking with Sun about the work currently being done towards re-opening the factory, Fauzee said that right now they were upgrading the facilities.

He went on to add that even not, survey work to develop the harbour of Funaddoo was ongoing.

“Right now, we are looking into making the place operate as soon as possible. We did not take on the place to let it remain as is. I give that assurance to fishermen.”

However, Fauzee did not that there were some difficulties in doing this.

“MIFCO is being operated on a very tight cashflow, in paying fishermen and everything else.”

Additionally, he revealed that locations to purchase fish from Thaa Atoll and Meemu Atoll have been decided, and the work to develop those areas were happening.
