Supreme Court’s SG fired for installing cams to spy on justices

Supreme Court’s Secretary-General Dr. Hussain Faiz has been dismissed for installing cameras to spy on the court’s justices and employees.

Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) announced on Wednesday that an investigation proved the allegations against him to be true.

DJA said their investigation uncovered Faiz installed a CCTV camera system inside the court under the pretense of enhancing the security at the court, and enabled live feed from the system to be viewed from his cabin and used it to spy on the court’s justices and employees.

DJA said that over MVR 200,000 was spent on the CCTV camera system, and that it was without preparing a statement of requirement as mandated under the Public Finance Regulation, and in violation of the purpose of maintaining security.

“Given his irresponsible actions, he is no longer fit for his role as senior administrator at the Supreme Court,” said the DJA.

DJA also found Faiz in violation of the code of conduct of judicial employees and of the set of rules employees are required to follow in order to maintain confidentiality of court proceedings.

DJA said that the office has lost confidence in Faiz, and that his actions had undermined public trust in the justice system.

Faiz was appointed as Secretary General of the Supreme Court on January 7, 2019. He had been under suspension in connection to DJA’s investigation since March 31.
