Purpose of no-confidence motion is weakening the government: Nazim

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is initiating motions of no-confidence against Ministers of the current government only to weaken the Government, said the Minister of Defense Muhammad Nazim. Nazim also said that MDP’s attempt to do so would not succeed.

MDP’s Parliamentary Group has brought a no-confidence motion against Minister Nazim too. Speaking to Sun Online last night, the Minister said that such attempts would not bear any fruits, as the government coalition is “strongly tied together”.

“I believe that such motions are introduced with no other purpose but to weaken the government. And I do not believe these attempts would in reality weaken the government. I strongly believe that the government is strong, and the coalition is strongly tied together. Hence, what they are trying to do would not be realized”, said Nazim.

Nazim also said that he never did anything which would justify a motion of no-confidence, and that he was given a cabinet seat unanimously by all the parties in the government coalition. He also expressed hope that the members of the coalition would shield him from MDP’s attempts to attack him.

Minister Nazim also denied MDP’s allegations that he had, being temporarily in charge of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation in addition to his official seat at the Defense Ministry, combined the functions of the two ministries and exerted military influence to terminate a civil contract in which the government is a party without following the judicial processes.

The Minister also said that he would not cowed into stepping back by the no-confidence motion, and that he would stand forth with perseverance in observing his duties as a Minister.
