Over 60 media outlets in Maldives have signed the revised code of ethics for media.
The signings were held at the national radio station on Saturday afternoon.
The new revisions to the code of ethics for media comes after 11 years.
Maldives Media Council (MMC)’s president Mohamed Shafau Hassan told Sun the council received fell cooperation from media outlets to revise the code of ethics to meet modern standards.
“The revisions to the code of ethics were made with all medias in one place,” he said.
Shafau said the MMC also received support from Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) and the Editor’s Guild.
“We always talk about press freedom. But with the freedom comes responsibility. With the new revisions, we explain to the public our responsibilities. And how we will work,” he said.
Shafau said one of the key revisions is making it mandatory to inform the public of erroneous reporting, and in situations where articles are removed, medias will be required to explain the reason for the decision.
Shafau said that in the future, medias will be required to make their own code of ethics.
All media outlets in Maldives are required to follow the new code of ethics.
