Committee to review Firaaz’s appointment to PCB as vice president

Mohamed Firaaz, Aazaadheebahaaru, HA. Ihavandhoo, nominated by the President as Vice President of Privatization and Corporatization Board.

The motion submitted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih seeking parliamentary approval for the appointment of Mohamed Firaaz, Aazaadheebahaaru, HA. Ihavandhoo, as the vice president of the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has been sent to committee for review.

President Solih’s motion submitted via a letter was read during today’s parliamentary sitting by Secretary General Aminath Niusha.

The President’s letter requested that he be informed of the parliament’s decision regarding the appointment of Firaaz to PCB, under Article 9 (a) and (b) of Law of Privatization, corporatization, monitoring and Evaluation of Government businesses.

The motion has been sent to review by Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises Committee.

PCB is a seven-member Board established under Finance Ministry in 2013, which acts as the regulatory body of State-Owned Enterprises. The appointment of President and Vice President to the Board requires approval from the President.

A president was appointed to PCB in February this year; Asim Mohamed.

The position of President of PCB – the regulator of State-Owned Enterprises – had remained vacant for over a year since former President of the Board, Hassan Waheed’s resignation in September 2020.

He had tendered his resignation citing attempts to influence his decisions.

Hassan Waheed had been summoned to the Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises Committee five days before his resignation over claims of failure to uphold his duties and responsibilities.
