Maldives National University (MNU) has awarded scholarships to nine students who achieved the highest score among the applicants that applied for scholarship opportunities announced for this year’s second semester.

The award letters were presented to the students during a special ceremony held at MNU on Wednesday, by the university’s Chancellor Dr. Hassan Hameed.

MNU launched its scholarship scheme with the aim of promoting excellence in learning and helping those students who are most in need.

The scholarship scheme was introduced by the university’s council. Expenses of the scholarship scheme are covered by the income received to the university.

MNU’s opened 24 scholarship opportunities in three categories for the second term of this year; undergraduate and postgraduate full scholarship, undergraduate and postgraduate tuition fee scholarship and Shaheed Awards.

75 students applied for 20 opportunities opened under undergraduate and postgraduate tuition fee scholarship. 41 students applied for two opportunities opened under the undergraduate full scholarship and 33 students applied for two opportunities opened under the postgraduate full scholarship. Six students applied for four opportunities opened under the Shaheed Awards.

Commenting on the scholarships, MNU’s Vice Chancellor Mohamed Shareef said that scholarship opportunities are announced every single semester, with the purpose of providing opportunities for educationally bright students with financial difficulties to pursue their studies.

“Although the tuition fee is covered, a significant amount is also given as living expenses. We have taken into account when included living allowances,” he had said.

Speaking further, Shareef said that there were still obstructions to educating students in the field pertinently needed for the Maldives. In this regard, he noted lack of support from students for scholarship opportunities opened in the field of education.

“One of the difficulties we currently face is with respect to directly approaching schools. This must be carried out through the ministry. If these issues are solved, we would be greatly eased,” he added.
