Indian High Commissioner for the Maldives D. M. Mulay has been replaced.
“India Today”, an Indian newspaper reports thatMulay has been placed as the new Indian consul general to New York. Heis to be replaced by Mr. Rajiv Shahare, who currently looks after the West Asia portfolio in the foreign office in New Delhi.
Mulays posting in the Maldives was scheduled to end in April 2012.
Mulays replacement coincides with a time when relations between Maldives and India have deteriorated to its lowest point in recent history. He has recently been harshly criticized by some political parties.
Mr. Abbas Adil Riza who was transferred from the Presidents Press Secretary to the Ministry of State for Finance criticized Mulay recently saying that he too has to leave along with GMR. This criticism was taken seriously by the Indian Government.
Indian Foreign Minister Mr. Salman Khurshid recently said that Indian government has tried to engage its neutral policy in trying to deal with the recent problem with Maldives but also said that Maldives has put India’s patience to the test.
India Today reports that the Indian government believes that there are elements of anti-Indian sentiments in Maldives and also in the Maldivian government.
Mr. Mulay is still in Male’. An Indian official told Sun today that it will take a few months for Mulay to leave Maldives.
