A new powerhouse was inaugurated at HA. Uligan after 26 years.

The old powerhouse located in the middle of the island, was moved to a nonresidential area and brought into operation with further developments on Saturday.

Commenting on Fenaka’s new office and powerhouse inaugurated at Uligan – Fenaka’s Managing Director Ahmed Saeed told Sun that the old powerhouse was situated in the middle of the island, describing it as smoke kitchen.

“It was at a point the loud noises from the powerhouse had rendered people unable to hear prayer call from the mosque. The smoke emitting from the place (powerhouse) turned the area into black clouds. Therewith, I describe this to be as the solution to the difficult circumstance the island’s residents were living under for the past 26 years,” he had said.

Saeed said that infrastructure of the old powerhouse was very construed. Hence, he stressed that employees were working in very stressful environment.

Underscoring that the island’s whole network has been transformed to an HV network – Saeed said that the newly inaugurated powerhouse will be usable without requiring a change for the next 40 years as a result.

He went onto state that one of the most important work carried out after the current administration assumed office was to move powerhouses in residential areas to non-residential areas and transform the electricity network to a more suitable and quality network of islanders.

On this note, Saeed detailed that there were 67 powerhouses across the Maldives which needs to be moved and further developed. He added that these powerhouses were at a wrong level, and extremely frail.

Saeed said that approximately 80 powers houses have now been moved under these efforts. He said that the aim was to complete 90 percent of the project by the end of this year – and fully compete the project by next year’s March.
