President reaffirms govt’s commitment to provide more opportunities for athletes

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Monday, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to develop local sports and provide more opportunities for athletes.

The President had made the remark during a meeting with the national table tennis team following their grand return after representing the country at the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games 2021 held in Konya, Türkiye, from August 9-18 – in which the women’s team won bronze in the team event.

The ceremony held to welcome back the tennis team and celebrate their achievements was held at the President’s Office this evening.

Speaking during the meeting, President Solih reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing sports and providing more opportunities for athletes – pledging that the administration would do more to support athletes excelling in different sports areas. 

He also expressed his gratitude and congratulated the women’s team for their courage and determination.

In this regard, the President said that the athletes’ accomplishments resulted from the hard work and time of many, including their parents. He noted previous achievements for the country in the regional arena and expressed his confidence in the athletes and teams to bring home even more outstanding achievements.

He also said that accomplishments in international competitions are a source of fame and pride for the nation.

Taking note of the administration’s efforts to develop the sporting sector – President Solih gave details of the initiatives to provide more opportunities for talented young athletes outside the Malé region to develop their talent and compete in tournaments.

The meeting to celebrate the achievements of national tennis team and welcome them back on Monday was also attended by Vice President Faisal Naseem, cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
