The Maldives National Movement, formed to protest against GMR, has said that its efforts to free the airport have been successful, and that it will now confront the Parliament to get it on track.
The National Movement held a function at Artificial Beach last night, to celebrate the government’s announcement of the termination of the agreement signed by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government to lease the airport.
Minister of State for Tourism and member of the Steering Committee of the National Movement, Ahmed Shameem said while speaking at the function that the National Movement was formed to solve various problems all over Maldives.
“We have reclaimed the airport from GMR. From tonight onwards, we will focus our efforts on the Parliament. God willing, we will commence efforts tomorrow night, as per your wishes, to get the Parliament on track,” he said.
President of Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran, while speaking last night, accused GMR of bribing MPs to vote in favour of establishing secret voting for the no-confidence motion against the President. He stressed that these activities must be stopped immediately.
He said that Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid should put an end to these activities - failure to do which would result in people ‘chasing’ Shahid on the day the vote is taken.
He said that all MPs who vote in favour of establishing secret voting will be identified as traitors, and that they will be ‘chased’ as well.
The no-confidence motion against the President, signed and submitted by 26 MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party, has been put on the Parliament agenda for Monday, 3 December.
