The Ministry of Transport has decided to cancel the aerodrome certificate issued to GMR, which permits the company to operate the airport.
GMR was presented with this certificate on 25 November 2010 by Transport Authority at a ceremony held to hand over the airport to GMR.
An official of Transport Authority said today that GMR has been informed via a letter that since the company has been given a seven-day notice to hand over the airport, the aerodrome certificate will also expire on the last day of the notice period, which is 7 December 2012 at 11:59pm.
Transport Authority said that the airport cannot be operated without this certificate.
Meanwhile, it was decided earlier today to cancel the work permits and visas of GMR employees, and not to issue addition visas to GMR personnel.
The government terminated its agreement with GMR last Tuesday, and notified GMR to hand over the airport to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) within seven days.
GMR has also been informed to remove their property within 30 days.
GMR has responded by saying that the notice was given against the agreement, and that it will not heed the government’s decision.
