Tree Top Hospital, on Wednesday, has revealed that they have successfully completed a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery for a patient with a congenital heart disease.

The hospital identified the patient as 19-year-old Leanne Glauser from Switzerland who was born with a Complex Cyanotic Heart Disease (CCDH). They detailed that CCDH causes heart defects that decrease the amount of oxygen delivery to the body – resulting in the skin having a bluish tint, called cyanosis.

Glauser, a football player, suffered an injury in 2021 – leading to ACL damage.

Upon clinical evaluation – Tree Top Hospital said that Glauser was diagnosed to have torn her ACL ligament; one which is in the center of the knee making it vital for the stability of the knee. They added that the injury to the area had simultaneously caused weakening to the quadriceps muscles of the thigh.

The hospital stressed that ACL injury is one of the most feared sports injuries that can leave a person vulnerable and can only be corrected through surgery.

Glauser underwent arthroscopic under the oversight of orthopedic surgeon at Tree Top Hospital, Dr. Kanninraj Marimuthu.

Dr. Marimuthu is a consultant orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery, sports medicine surgery, shoulder surgery and knee surgery. He completed his MBBS from Madras Medical College, India followed by orthopedic training (MS Ortho) in the orthopedic department of Sawai Man Singh Medical College, India. During his training period, he was bestowed ‘All India Best Resident Orthopedic Surgeon Award’ by the Bombay Orthopedic Society for his clinical and academic excellence.

“ACL surgery is a routine surgery but this was a complex clinical situation especially from anaesthesia and cardiology point of view due to the heart disease. Leanne underwent surgery and was able to walk the same day evening. She is progressing well after the surgery. We wish her the best and hope she can return to the football pitch soon,” Dr. Marimuthu had said commenting on the surgery.

Underscoring that getting preliminary investigations and examinations done prior to a surgery was a hectic process – Glauser said she had a wonderful time with Tree Top Hospital’s team.

“I know it is usually a hectic process to get the preliminary investigations and examinations done prior to a surgery, but I had a wonderful time with the team at TTH,” she had said.

Tree Top Hospital said that its orthopedic specialists have extensive training, experience and expertise in minimally invasive surgery and reconstructive surgery. They also noted that the surgeons used the latest techniques and tools to improve care for individuals of all ages with problems in all areas of orthopedics.

The hospital reaffirmed its commitment provide the highest quality of clinical care for all patients through experienced and highly trained specialists combining a wide variety of interests and expertise to offer the latest services.
