Weekly Covid update: New cases drop to 771

Statistics released by Health Protection Agency (HPA) show COVID-19 cases show a drop in new cases in Maldives last week, compared to the previous week.

Total 771 new cases were reported in Maldives in the one-week period from July 3-9. 1,134 new cases had been reported the previous week.

The 771 new cases last week include 192 cases from the greater Male’ region, 304 cases from residential islands outside Male’, and 275 cases from other areas such as resorts and industrial islands.

31 patients were hospitalized, while one patient died from complications.

With the 771 new cases last week, Maldives now has 183,491 confirmed cases. 307 people have died from complications.

Maldives saw a spike in COVID-19 cases in June, prompting HPA to urge people to wear masks and maintain physical distancing. The country also rolled out the second booster shot, currently open for people above the age of 65 years and high-risk individuals between 18-65 years.

As of July 9, 384,648 people have received two shots of COVID-19 vaccine – which is 84.95 percent of the eligible population. 165,066 people (36.45 percent) have received the first booster dose, and 689 people (0.15 percent) have received the second booster shot.
