Vice President Faisal Naseem said on Sunday that state-owned enterprises (SOEs) were instrumental in implementing the government’s policies and alleviating the difficulties facing atolls.

He made the remark while speaking at the function held in Dharubaaruge on Sunday evening to mark the 25th anniversary of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).

Faisal said STELCO played a crucial role in implementing the government’s policies. He emphasized the importance of electricity in today’s modern world and highlighted the huge responsibility and effort required to provide uninterrupted services.

“STELCO provides electricity to around 35 islands across the country, in addition to Male’. It also provides water and sanitation services,” he said.

Faisal spoke about the role of STELCO’s management in building a capable and efficient team, and acknowledged the hard work of the company’s staff.

Faisal said that one of the biggest goals of the government was to promote inclusivity.

He noted that STELCO employed around 35 people with disabilities.

He spoke of the need to create an inclusive and cohesive work environment where people with disabilities are encouraged and assisted.

“No one is perfect. Everyone needs support,” he said.

At the ceremony, Faisal inaugurated STELCO’s rooftop solar project, "Avikatha”, which will see the installation of solar panels in all the powerhouses operated by the company.

He also presented awards to STELCO’s former managing directors who served in the company for over the past 25 years, and other long-serving staff and best-performing managers.

STELCO was formed in 1997 as a 100-percent state-owned enterprise to provide electricity services in Male’ City.
