Man sentenced to 24 years in prison for drug trafficking

Drugs seized by police in a counter-narcotics operation.

Criminal Court has sentenced a man that was arrested with drugs from a speedboat departing from Male’ City to another island to 24 years in prison.

Inaan Ahmed, Suvaasa, N. Velidhoo, was arrested for attempting to traffic drugs on a speedboat departing from Male’ City to an island, from the jetty in front of Bank of Maldives, on June 27, 2020.

The drugs discovered in Inaan’s possession were identified as 19.2616 grams of diamorphine. Therewith, he was charged with trafficking diamorphine.

Inaan had pled not guilty to the charges against him. Criminal Court’s judgement read that the cigarette pack in which the drugs were discovered on cannot be considered ‘not hidden’ from a person getting on the speedboat. It was stressed that although the place where the cigarette pack was discovered does not have a lock, it cannot be considered easily accessible.

It was also noted that Inaan’s fingerprints were discovered on the cigarette pack.

Apart from being sentenced to 24 years in prison, Inaan was also slapped with a fine of MVR 100,000 – to be settled with Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within a one-year period.
