Police have begun looking a video which appears to show Mariyam Shifa, an actor and model who rose to fame through TikTok, engaging in sexual acts with another woman.
The video in question leaked on social media on Sunday.
A police spokesperson told Sun on Tuesday evening that the video had come to the attention of the police, and that they were looking into it.
Meanwhile, Shifa issued a statement on Tuesday, claiming it was a deepfake edit video.
“This was a pre-planned attempt to defame me! This was a personal attack to defame me because I changed my political allegiance! The articles on media are fake news! This was done to me because I am a woman!” she wrote on social media.
Maldives National Party (MNP), which Shifa belongs to, confirmed on Monday that the party’s disciplinary committee had opened an investigation in response to the video.
In the wake of the leaked video, Shifa was kicked out of the dance group she worked for – run by actor Jadulla Ismail and additional partners.
Jadulla wrote on Facebook that Shifa was kicked out of the dance group after she admitted to engaging in sexual relations with women.
The video has also sparked public outrage, with many calling for legal action against her.
