Stressing the importance of education for the development of the nation, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed called on the government on Friday to make education free up to master’s degree.
Speaking at the Dh. Atoll Madrasa’s Prize Day event on Friday evening, Siyam said the obstacles to accessing quality education was one of the most common complaints he had been hearing from the people for the last two decades.
“I want to call upon the president and the government to make master’s degree free in Maldives starting next year,” he said.
Siyam said that the government should offer free education, starting from baby nursery.
Siyam highlighted on the importance of education in his speech.
“We have numerous opportunities for education now. We must make good use of these opportunities,” he said.
Siyam also said that education alone wasn’t enough, and that children must be instilled good virtues and discipline.
“In work and in businesses, one cannot progress without maintaining their discipline,” said Siyam, one of Maldives’ leading businessmen.
Siyam expressed appreciation for the hard work of teachers in building the future of the nation.
He also congratulated the students who won prizes, and encouraged them to serve their nation and their home island using the education they gain.
It had been Siyam who submitted the legislature ratified in 2012 to guarantee pre-school education for all children in Maldives.
