Elections Commission (EC) has announced it will be fining political parties for fake forms submitted to the commission starting from the beginning of last month.
EC’s deputy chairman Ismail Habeeb confirmed in a tweet that the commission made the decision during a meeting on Wednesday.
Habeeb said that political parties will be fined MVR 10,000 for each fake form, while registrars of political parties will be fined MVR 5,000 for first offense and MVR 10,000 for repeat offense.
The decision comes amid complaints of people being registered to political parties without their consent or knowledge.
An emergency motion was recently submitted to the Parliament by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar over the issue. However, the motion was rejected as it failed to secure enough votes.
EC announced last month that has decided to publicize the information of people who apply to register with political parties in order to ensure the integrity of membership forms.
