Man imprisoned for sexual abuse dies in Hulhumale’

An inmate at the Hulhumale’ Prison died on Monday, shortly after he was taken to the hospital. 

Maldives Correctional Service has confirmed the death, identifying the deceased as Ali Mohamed, 58, Happy Rest, AA. Himandhoo. 

Maldives Correctional Service said that Ali Mohamed was inside his unit when he began suffering respiratory difficulties. 

He was initially treated at the medical center at the prison, before he was transferred to the Hulhumale’ Hospital after his condition worsened. 

Maldives Correctional Service said that Ali Mohamed died at approximately 03:20 pm, while receiving treatment at the hospital. 

He had been serving a 10-year sentence for the sexual abuse of a child. 

Maldives Correctional Service said that his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service and Human Rights Commission of Maldives were immediately notified when he was taken to the hospital.
