Remand of Pakistani chef arrested for murder extended by 15 days

The remand of the Pakistani chef arrested for the murder of a waiter at a restaurant in suburban Hulhumale’ has been extended by 15 days.

MD Shameem, identified by police as a Bangladeshi man, was found stabbed to death inside Khanji, a popular restaurant in Hulhumale’ where he worked as a waiter, in the evening of April 16.

Muhammad Abid, 26, a Pakistani national who worked as a chef at the restaurant, is accused of the murder.

Abid had fled the scene after the attack. He was arrested after an hours-long manhunt in the early hours of April 17, at the beach area in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

Abid was remanded in police custody for 15 days by Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court. With the expiration of the period – the Court has now extended his remand by 15 additional days on Sunday.

In his latest remand hearing, Abid had complain regarding having not received medical care for an injury to his head. Following this, the Court had instructed authorities to closely monitor his medical care.

Shameem’s murder had reportedly been prompted by a disagreement inside the restaurant’s kitchen, as the staff prepared meals for iftar.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Hulhumale' Hospital. Witnesses claim he sustained stab wounds to his head, neck and legs. At the request of his family, Shameem’s body was sent to Bangladesh.
