DRP condemns President

The President’s decision to join MDP in protesting against the demonstration planned for this Friday by opposition parties, has been condemned by DRP.

In a Press Conference held at DRP Office, Thulusdhoo MP Rozaina said that the President participating in the protest is strictly in conflict with the Law, because the President should be fair and protect the rights of all Maldivians, and cannot take sides and protest against one group of Maldivian citizens.

“Section 115 of the Constitution states, that it is the responsibility of the President to protect the independence and rights of all citizens. I do not believe that the President can protest against a group of demonstrators who want to voice their opinions on a particular issue,” Rozaina said.

Rozaina also said that these days, ceremonies are held in the name of inaugurating the government’s programs, so that the President can give speeches to inform the public of his views on this issue.

“Even at last night’s ceremony, issues relating to GMR and religion were more in focus than housing issues,” Rozaina said.

Deputy Leader of DRP Ibrahim Shareef also spoke in this regard and accused the President of using the Veshifahi Program as a way to hinder Friday’s protest.

Rozaina expressed concern with regard to MDP’s participation in the protest. She also noted that Police uses violence against members of opposition parties and protects members of MDP, in similar protests in the past.

As done by the Police Integrity Commission, she also advised the Police to act fairly in this protest.
